Below is a small time-line sampling of Kovalovsky "Zane Grey" reels.
The 16/0 stainless steel version, on the right in the first three photos below, is the first version and is identical to the actual patent drawing, also featured below.
The 16/0 gold anodized aluminum reel on the far left is the tiered version that is more common, if you consider any of these reels as being common. This reel is another early version as it is not marked "Zane Grey" and pre-dates Kovalovsky asking Grey to endorse them.
The 20/0 micarta version, center, is stamped "Zane Grey" and is Kovalovsky's masterpiece.
Here are some additional photos of the 16/0 stainless steel patent model. The reel attached to the rod via a uniquely designed reel seat that locked the reel into place. This cleverly designed reel seat also had special clamps to lock the reel's front and rear rod braces into place.
