Phil

Why don't you post pictures of the best fish of the past year. I want to get excited about the next year.

I didn't get out as much as I like to last year, but I had one good day on ShibI (small Yellowfin Tuna) last summer.

Nine o'clock at night on a 5/8 oz Jitterbug this past September while fishing for smallmouth in Canada. 40+ inches and 18+ pounds. Released to fight another day. Quite a battle on bass tackle in a 12 ft row boat. Thank God we had a net!

Bill,
That is one heck of a nice Pike you've got yourself there. I used to specialize in catching biD northerns back in MN and Canada. Aug/Sep tends to be the best time of year.

Nice job!
&thanks for sharing the tale.

-Winter is time for reminiscing. We have had some great fishing days in the past years. I remember two years ago when the reservoir was high, but the wind kept us from exploring in my boat. Wading saved the trip. Roger landed this 20” largemouth between the willow trees seen over his shoulder. It was a dandy fish.
Image

Then last year there was the fire fighting helicopter that “attacked” us at the boat ramp as we were loading the boat after a morning of fishing. The copter was dropping water on what turned into the largest wildfire in the US in 2015.

Image

I also well remember the day I talked the Rubber Reel Lady into coming along for a morning of Snake River smallmouth. It was a terrific morning with the big ones cooperating. Marilyn landed this 19” fish that is one of her best from the river…

Image
Then there was the 19” smallmouth that Dave caught on the upstream tip of Ware Island. I have named it “Dave’s Point” and it has produced several other dandy fish.

Image

I’ve got a lot of other great fishing memories, but one from 2014 sticks out. This largemouth was caught one summer evening right in front of our house by wading the edge of the smartweed. It was 22” and probably between 5-6 pounds. That is a 9” perch floating next to it. It spit up the perch during the fight.

Image

With 2’ of snow in the mountains already and 4-6 feet due in the next few days, we should have plenty of fishing this coming year.

I can't compete with you folks, just as my reels don't compete. Here is my best catch of the year. Caught him at an estate sale on the way home from playing golf. Bait was $10.00. Unsure of the species?

Re: Fish Pictures with a 1947 Young Beaudex

Post by Richard Lodge »

Finally got to try out a sweet Young Beaudex reel that Ron "Bulldog" McAlpin converted to "wrong-hand-wind" for me (that's LHW for all of you out there who don't speak Bulldog).

Made a trip to the Millers River, a beautiful freestone river that supports rainbows, native brook trout, a few browns and smallmouth.

Here's that Beaudex and a rainbow:

It's probably a class of fishing eras, but I used the Young on a Chris Barclay 7'10" fiberglass rod I bought from Chris last year. A great combo.

You bet, although that 2014 fiberglass rod would get me booted from the competition. Planning to bring a nice pre-1950 Amherst Fly Rod Co. bamboo rod to use with this Young reel.

One of six wild brown trout (16-18") caught and released on a #18 Copper John nymph one sunny August day. I fished upstream through the pool with a para hopper and took 3 fish, 2 rainbows and one brown. I decided to go up to the next pool and discovered that it was occupied so I fished down through the first pool with the nymphs. Much to my delight, the fish were more anxious to eat a nymph than they were the hopper!

These are from two weeks ago on the public lake where we live (for now) in Wisconsin. Some of you will recognize my dad in the first picture, he used to actively collect and attend shows but has only been to one show (Wisconsin Dells NFLCC show, 2014) in the last 10 years. His pike was 39 1/2", mine were between 36" and 38 1/2". We caught almost 100 that week, the majority over 30".
