spearing

Post by John Pflueger »

My dad used to spear in Minnesota by Lake Winnibigoshish in Minnesota . He had a sucker bait that went back and forth. He then was looking down in the hole when it became black. That was a northern pike. He threw the spear into the pike and it hit the pike. The spear stayed strait up in the fish while swimming through the water. He got the spear back and the fish. [This was in the 60s].

They still do it, called "dark house spearing" using a "decoy": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rq11ArpEUvE

I have spent my fair share of time in a Minnesota 'dark house'. My friend's grandfather made some great custom decoys.

Great fun!
