Took a little trip out on the Big lake this morning
So i live about an hour from Lake Michigan and I have never really made enough time to go after some of the Salmon that are rumored to live out there. Well this morning was the morning I decided to try. My friend and I discussed going this morning because the wind looked like it would cooperate. We ended up taking his walleye boat about 8 miles out which was a little interesting to say the least but we made it work.
Here is my very first King Salmon. This trip may end up being an expensive one by the time I'm done outfitting my boat for next season!

We were trolling with down riggers with flashers and spoons. I caught this guy on a penn peer and a silver and blue spoon. The fight was incredible, on his initial run he took 300 feet of line before he started to cooperate. I'm not sure how long it took but it wasn't a quick fight.

I've caught those on lake Michigan! My best trip was 2 about that size and 3 Coho. The Kings can really fight. The limit was five mixed. They are really good either broiled or smoked.

That little Penn 9 must have gotten a little warm on that run! Certainly worked those drags! ...or probably a 209 or 309, eh? Great fun!

Got a spare reel stamped "Pflueger" or a Montague Imperial?

Great Report!
Reminds me of fishing Lake Superior, and Lake Michigan for Salmon in the 70s and 80s. Good times. That is a nice fish, and it's cool you caught it on old school gear.

Robin:
I lived in Michigan City, Indiana, in the 80's and had my 21' Bayliner in in/out storage 5 minutes from where I worked. Lake Michigan surely has a mixed bag of salmon. My favorite (at least for eating) were the spring coho. Not big but very, very tasty. My first fish on the lake was caught in my little 15' tri-hull boat. It was a King and measured 36" and 25#. Needless to say I was hooked!
Nice fish, by the way. I'd say you are hooked now, too.

Nice fish Robin. I lived in Michigan City, IN also, but I was 6 years old in 1962. I have always heard of the great reels and fishing tackle that came out of that area (since we moved within 1 year to Kentucky). I got a call about 10 years ago from Michigan City about a pair of large BF Meek rubber saltwater reels, but couldn't get together on them. Still thinking about that. Its the ones that got away....

Wow, that's a nice fish.
I've been king salmon fishing on Lake Ontario off Rochester, NY. I can still remember how delicious and bright the fillets looked when we cleaned our catch.
Congrats on a new fishing adventure.
