Guadalupe tailrace

Post by Ron Mc »

the Guadalupe - just 20 minutes from my house - is fishing very well this winter.

a month ago, I caught a wild trout that was spawned in the river last winter - it was 8" long, 3" tall, fat as the dickens, silvery bright like a San Juan fish, and with full wild finnage. It was also a week before ANY winter stocking in the tailrace this year.

and they're at it again - spawning trout in the southernmost tailwater in the US

My buddy Jimbo (in all the photos above) and I (the guy in the funny hat) got to fish several days with Frank Smethurst, filming an episode of TU On the Rise. It was glorious light, clear water and excellent sight-fishing.
It's going to make a great show, and wil be airing on the Outdoor Channel sometime after next April - when I know a date, I'll post it up here.

oh, and I was fishing vintage Heddon and Thomas cane rods, and prewar Young reels

gorgeous as usual Ron! Hey, I think I fished with that guy on an overnight boat out of San Diego! He and his crew were trying to get hooked up on albacore with fly rod...unfortunately, the trip was a bust, but we had fun anyway...

was Matt there?

we had 3 days to shoot, and the river fished so well, they had everything they needed by the afternoon of the second day.
We handed our rods over to the crew and they got to catch trout

He had a camera guy with him, but I can't recall what he looked like. I don't think we get that show out here...watched for quite awhile after that and never saw the show...but then, they never got enough footage to make a show out of the alby trip!

tossing another up because its a pretty photo
but also the story that goes with it makes me fond of it
I got out last weekend and hiked way upriver to the place where I caught a wild rainbow right after Thanksgiving.
Wanted to see if there were redds. There was a beautiful protected gravel bar in the middle of the river polka-dotted with redds. Tried to photograph it without success. But I did catch this fellow, who contributed...

showing a few more - the season has been going very well, and we're catching a few bruisers.
I had one on that was probably 26" this morning, and was into the backing twice, but tore out the fly on the second run.

Spoke the other day with Nick Davis, producer of TU on the Rise.

The Guadalupe tailrace episode of TU On the Rise will air on The Outdoor Channel as follows:
Friday Feb 27, 11:30 pm (CST)
Saturday Feb 28, 8am and 3 pm.

My buddy Jimbo and I were fishing with Frank Smethurst - we filmed this in December.
We couldn't have asked for two better days when we were filming - in fact, we had 3 days - we were just done in two. Should be some great fishing and amazing photography of big trout in little water.
