Large Pike on Old Tackle

Post by Robin Sayler »

I was out last weekend for one last time out fishing before I had knee surgery and kind of threw my summer away...

The pike were in the Bay out on Lake poygan so we decided to cast for some Northern. I decided to use an old orchard actionrod (metal) and a reel I bought at the national convention. The reel was a narrow spool pflueger supreme fitted with a cub handle. For anyone who has there doubts on the cub handle I can vouch for them, if you adjust them properly they work perfect( as long as you hang onto the handle)

After catching a few small pike I hooked into this one and an epic battle began. Fighting these fish on these old set-ups is a little different than using modern reels but it worked just as it was designed too.

This Northern was 37" and the old supreme casted perfectly all day just like it was made too, around 60 years ago.

Very nice fish Robin. I loved pike fishing - enough that I wrote a term paper in college on the Esox family.
