Another Orvis Question
I was staffing the ORCA booth at the Grand Rapids Fishing Show last weekend and a guy asked me about an ORVIS Featherweight made in the USA with an 'SS' or 'SSS' on it and a patent 4182048. He's not on the web so I said I would get him some info but all I can find are Featherweight Shakespeares and Featherweigt Hardies - what am I missing?

Orvis
Lawson's Price guide lists Orvis Battenkill Feather by J.W. Young on page 122 and a Orvis SSS 11/12 on page 124. Not much info but maybe a start,

This reel is a JW Young baby Pridex marked for Orvis. 2-3/4" diameter. They bring about $150 in VG condition (but I haven't found anyone willing to let go of a good one).
This is an Orvis Battenkill Flyweight, BTW, but I'm thinking may be what he is asking about. Late '60s into early '70s.
As far as I know, made in the UK; however, there are actually still reels being assembled in the US from Young-made parts (J Austin Forbes).
here's one I posted for a friend on Clark's board - on the left (Hardy Flyweight on right):
