Reminds me of reading the Sears Roebuck Christmas catalog when I was a kid.

i agree alot of good items in there
alot of people have asked how the bidding works?
theres no preview, (not many photos online)
only a start time for each day
yes you can leave a bid online or phone in

but if it s not an actual live auction
and is not timed like their other auctions

how do u know who's bidding ?
how do u know how long they will run each lot ?
some person managing computer bids the other end?

alot of questions...and no clear answers on the website
unlike ebay u can see users details
or other internet 'live' (although they are not actual live auctions) they are just some computer person sitting there managing bids

you dont know if actual real bids are being placed against a bid you leave before or during auction

happy to hear if anyone has learnt how it actually works

Rich,
The answers to your questions can best be found on the "Bid" page from Lang's home page:
How to Bid

It is in fact a live auction, bidding is in real time with both a video and audio feed viewable once registered for the sale. For those opting to bid with a phone representative, a staff member in the bidding room acts as a proxy for the bidder - again, in real time.

Screen shots from the above link will give a visual of how the bidding works when participating in the sale.
unlike ebay u can see users details
I guess its been quite some time since you've participated in eBay auctions - they cloak the buyers "details" and have for some time.

hi jim

thats great info for everyone
more explanation from you, than from their site ...dosent make its clear or explain it anywhere

a friendly suggestion they might want to make it more clear

yes agree ebay dosent show full users deatails
but show u the end of their user name and feedback rating
so u can see if it a a real bidder...not some one bidding up their own item
with the 'live' auction u have no way of knowing if the internet bidders are actual bidders
and the note thats says 'floor bidders' theres no one there !! its being run out of a room in front of a camera and staff only :)
so thats already misleading
point is u have have no way of knowing/verifying if you are bidding against real bids

rasies more questions than it does give confidence

hope other buyers/bidders jump in and give their feedback/ based on use/experience

The "floor bidders" are telephone bidders. I don't see Lang's auction format as misleading in any way. They are well-established in the industry and are a trusted company. Many members here have been taking advantage of their service for many, many years. It still comes down to getting something for the price you're willing to pay. If it goes higher, quit bidding. If you're worried about Lang's running up the bids, then eBay might be a better venue for you.

I placed about 12 absentee bids and followed the auction live on my iPad.

It was a cool way to spend a few hours at home today. Lang’s has brought cutting edge technology to fishing tackle auctions and I’m grateful.

I’d like to add my 2 cents. I am originally from upstate New York. I lived 12 miles from Lang’s home town, Waterville. I attended quite a few “discovery” auctions that they conducted, I have purchased several reels from their online auctions and just today won a reel. My one regret in moving to Florida is that I am no longer able to attend their discovery auctions! I totally trust this business. They have, in my opinion, conducted their business in an extremely professional and trustworthy manner. They have always been very honest with any transaction. I will say that I don’t always agree with their grading of some of the reels they sell, but then again, we all look at condition a little differently. If there should be any doubt as to trust of an auction service, Lang’s should not be in question.
