International reel collectors

Post by Mike N »

Currently, only 2 of the 25 “most watched” antique fishing reels on eBay are American made. It would be nice to grow ORCA internationally in response. Any ideas?

Maybe a joint convention abroad one year with a British or Swedish reel collectors club?

As of 8 AM, 8 of them are Hardy fly reels, and a couple others are Hardys, too. And most, maybe all, are being sold by the same guy. So what?

It’s not who is selling them, Steve-o, it’s the large “watcher” interest reflecting who is buying them. It’s called a metric. That’s what.

Fourteen of the top thirty five are fixed spool spinners. :yay I think, then, maybe we should be putting more focus on open face spinners!
Love those Open Face Spinning Reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco)

it’s the large “watcher” interest
In this case, or at least at this moment in time, a large proportion of the watchers are Hardy collectors, and I suspect that most of the watchers are the same from reel to reel. The metric would be badly skewed and have little or no significance, especially when it's based on an n of 25 and on this particular day.

Watcher counts usually are correlated with the high-endedness of items. On a day when so many high-end fly reels from the same non-U.S. maker are listed, the number of watchers of what happen to be non-U.S. reels will be high.

So what? If we're planning a response to something, let's first have a convincing something. (Otherwise, we could end up with something analogous to a national "emergency.")

How many of us would be able to afford to travel abroad for an ORCA convention? Not this guy.

There are many antique tackle groups from many countries on Facebook, and I've seen plenty of interesting conversations on some, along with references to and from ORCA. They help stimulate interest in each others' reels. Participating in those groups can be done without any concern for ebay watch counts.

(Regarding joint conventions: remember how well our planned association with DACA turned out?)

I was going to mention that. Most of our members know nothing about that venture.
If we concentrated on the really important things in life there would be a shortage of fishing tackle
