Got a spare reel stamped "Pflueger" or a Montague Imperial?

The Red Reel pictured is an OCEAN CITY 944 2nd version with the level wind neutral when Freewheeling.Brian F. wrote:Hmmmm, to round this post out a bit then, what is this and what is the correct reel?
And of course Wrong is Right in that the 994 is a Take Apart, Round, (not oval) Black in color and was also known as known as Smooth Caster.

I just made the change as shown below http://www.orcaonline.org/ocean-city-sa ... reel-page/. It would be nice to have a picture of the correct reel so this edit is a placeholder until the correct image becomes available.
Harry, how about volunteering to help review/edit FRR pages?

This is interesting. When I think of Ocean City products I put them into a span of time when Ocean City was its own company. That era is from 1922 to 1957. After 1957, Ocean City was acquired by True Temper. I no longer feel reels made after 1958 are Ocean City reels. At best they carry both names, but, they are not pure Ocean City models.
This red Model 944, is a copy of an Ocean City Topsail. The Topsail model was made by Ocean City, introduced in 1951, black side plates in many different model numbers up Model 940. I see the Model 944 as a True Temper reel.

How do you view the Montague-Ocean City connection, then, Mike?m3040c wrote:This is interesting. Re: OCEAN CITY http://www.orcaonline.org/ocean-city-salt-water-and-the-numbered-reel-page/
Well, in my humble opinion, I see Montague and Ocean City as a partnership dating back before the war. A partnership with a deep managerial relationship across the executive branch of both companies. I feel those companies enhanced each other's businesses. Ocean City and Montague did not flaunt their partnership to the public until after the war and even then the two companies tried to keep their own identities. How do you view the Montague-Ocean City connection, then, Mike?
I am by no means a fan of True Temper reels. I basically stop considering Ocean City products as true OC engineered work once True Temper took them over. I see True Temper as a Corporate Takeover of Ocean City, not a partnership. True Temper effected the quality of the Ocean City product in a negative way, again, my opinion.
I have nothing against True Temper, I just do not consider them in the same category as Ocean City. I feel they were more of a Freshwater Company.
