ORCA at NFLCC Nationals

Post by Mike N »

Here are a few early photos from Ft. Wayne, Indiana (room trading today, show opens tomorrow.)

1.) ORCA Member Jim Wheeler of NY with a Moscrop reel from Manchester, England. Jim was also exhibiting several rare lures, including a Haskell Minnow.

6.) Great to see ORCA’s own Henry Caldwell of Lake George, NY. I told Henry we all eagerly await returning to that beautiful lake for another national convention.

7.) NFLCC Region 7 Vice President Casey Jones was offering a few neat reels he just acquired, including (TOP) an unmarked and marked Heddon Whitehouse with a March 5, 1952 repair tag and (BOTTOM) a narrow spool Shakespeare, Jr. alongside a great sister Shakespeare wide spool.

8.) Ft. Wayne is a city of 250,000 population. The Ft. Wayne Tincups, Class A franchise for San Diego, play in the stadium behind the hotel and many collectors can see the game from their hotel window.

I was short a seat for my son at my table, and of course the most loyal ORCA member, our treasurer Roger Schultz (GA) came to the rescue. Thanks, Roger.

ORCA’s new VP, Matt Wickham (KY), did us all proud with the finest all-around casting reel display I’ve ever seen.

Under the heading, a real man from Indiana, comes these Indiana reels being offered on behalf of Kirby Mossburg. His reels were featured in a recent Reel News, and were being offered by a friend, because (listen carefully), Kirby, who is 75, had a stone mason’s job today to finish. Geez...

A tiny Al Foss (unmarked) tournament casting reel. It is feather light and possibly made of magnesium according to a few ORCA members who examined it.

Here are a few side-by-side photos of what is believed to be an unmarked Al Foss magnesium tournament reel vs Matt Wickham’s beautiful, stamped Al Foss tournament reel. Two of the immediately noticeable differences are the 3-screw vs. 4-screw construction on the front plate and button position. The rear bearing caps are almost identical.
