Red, White, and Blue Shakespeare reels

Post by Wayne B. »

I have one NIB Shakespeare 1975 Red, White and Blue reel and two 1976 narrow spools. These are the noisiest reels I have ever owned. I am getting ready to sell one of my narrow spools, so I took it apart to see where the noise is coming from. It seems like the "tinny" noise in the reel is the anti-reverse pawl that lays on the large main drive gear. And the free spool mechanism is meager at best.

These are very collectible reels because of low production numbers. Has anyone experienced my evaluation?

I have a 1975 and 1976, neither of which seems unusually noisy to me. I have noticed, however, that a large number of them have lost one or more of their nameplates, as there seems to be a lot of them out there without one or two of them. I guess a low quality glue was used.
