Cozzone head scratcher
Several of the ORCA guys looked at this reel of mine at the FATC Daytona show last week and admired its unique shape. At one time I thought I had seen something referring to this type reel as a bass reel, but I have nothing to support that view. I welcome any information that you may have about this very nice Cozzone reel!
thanks, Bryce Tawney

Hey Bryce,
A 100 yard size reel is usually called Bass Size. I haven't seen that specifically on any Cozzone literature though. Below is all the info on marking his reels that I have and reels are listed as catalog numbers.

Could the side plates have been ground down, for whatever reason(s)?
Re: Cozzone head scratcher
Two box labels in pics "borrowed" from ebay. The 250-yarder label has a usage labeling but the 100-yarder doesn't.

Maybe some previous owner decided to eliminate a chip or crack in a plate. Easiest method.Could the side plates have been ground down, for whatever reason(s)?

Exactly what I was thinking if they are not round and indeed odd shaped .wrong99 wrote:Could the side plates have been ground down, for whatever reason(s)?
Maybe Ron could measure across one of his without the metal re-inforcemnent plates as on this one and compare them .

Re: Cozzone head scratcher
I don't think there is much doubt about whether or not the top has been ground down, the change of angle is not the same distance from those top pillars. I do, though, find it interesting that it has two pillars front and back, no top pillar and yet it has a 100 yard foot.

Re: Cozzone head scratcher
I suspect the same tool that sharpened my thumb was used to round out the top...and it might have related to removal of a top pillar and associated holes, either because it was broken out or more likely, to get it out of the way.

Re: Cozzone head scratcher
Well it looks like it has 4 Pillars and all mine only have four however I don't Think I have a 100 yd sooooooo If the owner would measure the circumference of both sides it would be of some help I think.john elder wrote:I suspect the same tool that sharpened my thumb was used to round out the top...and it might have related to removal of a top pillar and associated holes, either because it was broken out or more likely, to get it out of the way.

Re: Cozzone head scratcher
Years ago, if I remember correctly, ORCA member Laurie Bingham told me about these reels (yep, there are lots more in this same configuration), telling me they were tournament surf casting reels, made without the top pillar for the same reason many other tournament reels lack them - for better thumb control. Brian Purrone had at least one pictured on his site

and Lang's has sold a few as well

Re: Cozzone head scratcher
Goes to show how savvy I am about conventional style casting reels. I think I go back over to my open face spinning reel corner now.
