Old Reel

Post by Craig »

Hello all;
Small brass reel "Milward & Sons", approx 2 inches in diameter, think ivory handle; could anyone have an idea as to circa & possible worth ?
Was passed down to me from my grandfather many years ago;
Thanks Craig (Australia)

These little brass reels are neat and affordable collectables and even though they aren't highly valued, they make a fun and handsome display. I think I have about 12 of them in various sizes and by different (typically) UK makers. We avoid putting price tags on posted reels, but would just say you won't be making any mortgage payments with it and you should put it on the shelf and enjoy it!

As a hint about possible age, Milward’s “Iron Arm” trademark was first registered in the USA during 1902.

The reel was made in England so it would be better to find the British trademark records to see if it was used earlier.

Worldwide there have been a number of similar registered trademarks, particularly featuring axes. A cool utility I found allows you to search for European marks using an image of the mark, showing any really similar varieties.https://www.tmdn.org/tmview/welcome#/tmview

Time to go back to mystery trademarks on antique European reels and start tracking them down.
