Fess up ...who bought the Deally ?

Post by reelsmith. »

I think it will clean up great, but will need a proper handle.

I loved the $200-400 estimate on a decoy site.

Yes, it has a NY handle rather than a KY handle. I would say it has either a Malleson or Slote handle. Jay White recently posted what these reels should look like. It pays to follow Reel Talk. Here's Jay's photo of his No. 10, No. 12 and No. 7 Deally reels.

Maybe the handle was taken from this reel, which was from the same collection and in the same auction.

The JVH handle is right on that reel. I had one similar that was made by JVH, but had EVH sliding oil covers. Brothers down the street so this is what happens. What are you going to do if you need covers?

So Deally's brother was Malleson? :-)

Ron, help me understand your point. It's cryptic. My statement is correct. Convince me I'm wrong. :)

Obviously, we don't know for sure about history of this reel or who actually made the handle on the Deally reel. Maybe the original had the ivory knob (Like Jay's) that, as we know, could crack and fall off. A fisherman going to go fishing and will fix his equipment so that he can. He must have had NY reel that he scavenged the handle off of. This is my guess.

EVH sliding oil covers
What does that mean? Marked as EVH?

sorry Ron, I was agreeing with you in humor. EVH reels tend to stun, older brother Julius made some very nice reels, but didn't hit out of the park as often.
