First shows up in my 1950 catalog. The 1950 catalog does not mention the forward grip material, but the 1951 catalog describes it only as a composite material of cork and rubber. These would have been built by Montague.

I have had and have quite a few Montague big game rods but never a 724 marked rod. I have had a couple of them marked 725 for Ocean City 816 cradles and a few big ones just marked Double built or Single built but all have had the cork rubber fore grips. That grip looks non factory to me but someone else may no better ! John Taylor

The 724 number relates to a rod tip used with the OC Cradle reels. In the 1951 catalog OC calls out for a 724 tip to be used with 9/0, 10/0 or 12/0 handles. These tips may also have been offered in the Montague catalog with a handle rather than a cradle assembly.

There are strong similarities in the 1938 Montague Catalog. Not with the model number but with the style of the rod. Montague offered single, double or triple built split bamboo big game rods in the late 1930's and they share traits of your rod, in my humble opinion. Here are some culls from the catalog.

This is the rod rendition in the 1938 catalog.

This is the description of the rod in the same catalog.

This is not an exact match but your rod may not be a 1938, it could be from a few years before or after. Thought it was worth a comparison anyways.
