Anyone Know What This Box Originally Housed"

Post by wrong99 »

Interested to know the kind of Montague reel that this box originally housed. I'm not aware of any Montague fly reel that was referred to as a "Flyweight". Although the line capacity marking is missing on the box, from it's size I would suspect maybe a salmon fly reel? Thanks in advance.

Hardy is the first name that comes to mind with a “flyweight” reel.

But since Hardy obviously marked its reels, can we guess it’s a Hardy knock-off?

This is clearly a Montague box, though.

Hmmm. Montague. The epitome of the knock-off (no offense to my Montague collecting brethren, but did the company ever have an original idea?) It would not surprise me if Montague “borrowed” the “flyweight” name from Hardy for a single action fly reel.

See Richard Lodge's book, page 44.
On the label here, the No. portion is the model number and is partially missing. The yard size was to the right on the label and is completely gone. As the reel was sold in 50 and 100yd sizes, maybe this is the box for the 100yd.

Thanks, Jeff. Didn't even think to look in Richard's book. You're right and it would be for the 100-Yard size.
