Kopfs ? ...

Post by reelsmith. »

Has anyone seen this reel before ?

It looks rather ordinary, but the hard rubber is merely decorative and not structural.

The foot looks Kopf to me.

It seems Squires is not a name often encountered and when seen it is usually on a multiplier.

This is the first Squires fly reel I've seen.

I'm assuming its Kopf due to the known relationship between Squires and Kopf.

Note the foot is brass and the reel is plated. I guess the foot could have been plated too.

Dean.

The foot looks Malleson to me. However, that non-structural HR plate probably indicates Kopf.

Thanks Steve.

Which foot looks Malleson, the one pictured alone ? But you think the reel is Kopf ?

The foot on the Squires is a one-piece EVH type.

Referring to the lone foot. Kopfs are usually concave in the middle, but not always. Actually, nothing looks Kopf to me except for that HR plate. If the lone foot isn't from the RP fly reel, what's it doing there? And what's a one-piece EVH type?

Yes, the lone foot is from the RP reel. Just wanted to make sure you weren't referring to the Squires reel, which has a foot like that of an EVH, but with no hole/s ...and its brass ...so not very EVH like, but you get the picture. If not, here it is ...

I'm wondering if its original to the reel and who made the reel.

Dean, once again, let me try to compensate for my ignorance. The foot on that round reel does look like a replacement, but maybe not an "EVH like" one. Here's why:

Our unfinished ball handle project has revealed different styles of one-piece cast feet. One variable feature is the level of the crossbar at which the top of the foot intersects it. Examples:

The foot on your reel looks as if it's not EVH. I can't tell from your pic whether or not the top of the crossbar is flat or concave.
The feet shown below are, top to bottom, your reel, EVH, EVH, Karr, Crook.

Thanks Steve.

I was using EVH-type very generically.

Kind of like how I use Jaleoux to describe Coxe-looking reels.

Thanks again.

The RP reel is listed in Mills catalogs ...not that it helps with a maker.

That Mills pic may nail it. If the "PATENTED" is true, the Kopf HR plate patent would cover it. Malleson had only the one reel patent for the multiplying fly reel.

It was all that lure-collector training...glass eye, painted eye, plastic eye, round eye, oval eye, treble hooks double hooks, Pflueger prop, Creek Chub prop, etc., etc. But that's nothing, compared to figuring out which is the left-hand crank on a Mitchell-Henry reel.
