Old GovenoR Reel

Post by luv2findtreasures »

Anyone know who made the 250 yd reel "GovernoR? The last letter "R" is capitalized. The name is written on the handle. There are mo other markings. Sides are hard rubber. Handle is a wood knob.

The "GovernoR" is an after market handle that has been added onto the reel and has nothing to do the the maker or model of the reel itself. The reel appears to be either a vintage Pflueger or Montague reel. I will leave that one up to the Montague and Pflueger experts.

I believe that would be a version of the Rabbeth sold by Meisselbach.

Got a spare reel stamped "Pflueger" or a Montague Imperial?

What makes you think it's a Pennell? I don't see it marked as such.

The patent for the Rabbeth drag handle is this one:

Both Phil White and Steve Vernon cover in great detail the history of the Rabbeth Handle in their books (Meisselbach and Meisselbach-Catucci Fishing Reels, by Phil White - pp. 87, and Antique Fishing Reels - 2nd Edition by Steve Vernon, pp. 57)

The Govenor is simply the smaller version of the Rabbeth drag handle, manufactured by Meisselbach.

Hi, Mark. I actually wouldn't know. When I saw this thread I'd remembered seeing a couple tail-plates on ebay that looked nearly the same; Pretty distinctive tail-plate. One is advertised as a "Montague/Pennell Salt Water Free Spool fishing reel (lot#7391)". It's still up now.

The Pennell model by Montague is just one of maybe 100's of identical reels (German silver-bound hard rubber models) that Montague branded for endless retailers and wholesalers. The only difference was the branding and often no branding at all.

Ah! "Montague" should cover it then. Thanks for clarifying.
