The Windows 10 photo editor is easy to use https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... 99048a2c86. If you have an MacOS or Chromebook or phone there are similar apps. I almost always take pictures with my phone and use the editor to crop and reduce the size.

From what I found out. Patent was 1895 so 1900ish. Made by a machinest . Early for sure. And unique in some respects.

For those of us without an extra $120.00, what does page 89 say about the reel? Anyone?

Hmmm...there's some food for thought. Why don't I post the entire book, a result of over 30 years of collecting, photographing, and researching, so it won't even cost you ORCA membership dues?

By the book, do the research. It's fun. You can also buy a Membership in ORCA and get even more info. It's even more fun.

The OP is an ORCA member. Many people in this world cannot afford a $120 book, or food, or rent and come in here to ask a simple question, only to be told that for $160 they might get the answer to their question? Sorry, I find this ludicrous, especially for this club. Ron, if you have Steve's book, maybe you could answer the OP's question?

Dear Mark:
Folks who can't afford food or rent sure as heck shouldn't be collecting old fishing reels. Lotsa folks who are collecting old fishing reels drop dozens, hundreds, thousands of dollars monthly on reels, rotting reel boxes, etc., etc., often without even knowing what they're buying. But why drop even a dime for information about their stuff, accurate or not, when they can get it with no effort and for free on Facebook or Joe's or here or wherever, eh?

If you don't want to buy the book, fine. But don't start whining about the price and my unwillingness to post bits of it online to satisfy your passing curiosity. I get hundreds of queries annually by email or phone, and I always do my best to answer them accurately. I answer plenty of questions here, too (trying to build up that gospel reputation). And it's none of your business, but I had already sent Bud a copy of what I wrote in the book about Gray. I'm positive that's enough said.

Well said Steve, some people will NOT invest in research, they expect it for free with information wrapped in a $10 bill.

I've probably invested 1,000's of hours of research alone and buying reels, boxes and catalogs I didn't personally want just to add to our Bronson site to make it the finest I could for people to come in and learn about their Bronson reels. I did so gladly. Don't lecture me about research, Stef.

Mark, I don't think Stef was addressing you. We all know you do enormous amounts of research, with hobby-wide benefits. But he is absolutely correct.

Here is an 1893-1895 patent application I found on Google. The handle in the patent drawing looks more complex than the simple (but stamped) handle shown in the photos above:

https://patents.google.com/patent/US549914

1. Inv a reel, the combination with the case thereof, having notches in one of its sides and a plate provided with a spring pawl engaging with said notches, of a spool provided with a ratchet-wheel, and a pawl pivoted on said plate and engaging with the teeth of the ratchetwheel, substantially as described.

2. Inv a reel, the combination with a spindle having a stop at one end and a spool, of a sleeve carrying the spool and surrounding said spindle, a crank-arm attached to said sleeve, a slotted tension plate on said crankarm and acting to draw the stop toward one side of the drum of the reel, substantially as described.
