Both reels in the ads show a counter balanced handle, but both reels in the photos show a non- counter balanced crank arm. Are we for sure talking about the same reels? Very interesting discussion!

The first of the ads describes two models, the 793 and the 803. They are also described as having different handles. They are also described as having other noticeable differences.

Just trying to learn more about these reels. Shouldn’t the handle on the one with the gold plated spool be recessed into the raised flange? It appears to be above and outside of the protective flange.

Hey Eric.

The crank on that reel is recessed into the raised flange ...note the scoring on the headplate. JVH often put a notch in the crank to create a lip that hung over the flange (or rim) to further tangle-proof the reel.

The Wells reel on Ron G’s website shows that reel with a bright finish like Clint’s.
I think it is curious that it is marked “Conroy-maker” if JVH was the maker?

I think Conroy marked everything "Maker".

Maybe this Bernard & Son reel from The Badminton Library volume by Pennell is the reel referenced by Wells in his book.
