I Also Had a Great Week

Post by Roger Schulz »

Playing off of Bill Muth's great week, I also had a great time this past week. This was my 13th year fishing the Snake River with Phil White for smallmouth bass. This past week was visiting with great friends, fishing the Snake, and buying some reels. Phil and Marilyn always treat me great. We have a lot of good fellowship and lots of good food. We fished for about 4 days and caught over 130 smallmouth. Sizes included an 18-inch, several 16-inch fish, and many 14 to 15-inch fish. It was hot, but we had a good time. Phil hit 89 this year, but still gets around well. My wife wondered why two old men that have trouble keeping their balance would go out on a boat on a river like the Snake. Answer: we both love to fish. My main reel purchase was Phil's Ricketts Glide reel and a hand written book by J. A. Ricketts on the reel and fishing in general. Hand drawn pictures are included in the book by Mr. Ricketts of his reel. The reel is very rare and somewhat complicated. Phil knows of a few other Ricketts reels owned by collectors, but the book is one-of-a-kind since it is had written. I was lucky to acquire the reel and the book. I also picked up a few Meisselbachs that I already have, but these have some minor variations.

A great week and I thank Phil for allowing me to visit and fish with him. I thank Marilyn for treating me to her fine cooking. Jack, Phil's new dog and I became fast friends. He does need a little training before he becomes a good fishing dog in the boat.

Roger, what a great story. And not just the comradeship and fishing. It's good to hear that Phil and Marilyn are so able to enjoy geezerhood. It's also good to hear that Phil was finally willing to let the Ricketts book see the light of day, and it couldn't have gone to a more deserving recipient. You have to admit that those Carlton "alumni" made quite a splash.

I miss seeing "Grandpa Phil" - a nickname that Phil tagged himself with after we fished together at one of the ORCA national shows. Great to hear he is doing well and congratulations on the Ricketts reel Roger!

That's good times Roger. I'm glad you inherited the Ricketts reel. IT looks like an amazing reel. You'll have to tell us how it works sometime.

Roger, thank you for sharing your recent experience with Phil. I'm so glad that he is still fishing and making the most out of his retirement. I had a chance to fish with Phil one year and passed on it. I still consider that to be one of the biggest mistakes (and regrets) of my life. I don't know of a less selfish person that was always willing to help others. Knowing him and being able to call him a friend has made my life better.

Good news for those interested in becoming an owner of a Ricketts Reel - Lang's Auction has one consigned for this fall's auction.
