Langley/Zebco/A&F spinning reels questions

Post by Paul Roberts »

Can the full-time “automatic” AR be disengaged/removed?

Does the A&F version have any greater value than the Langley or Zebco versions?

Hi, Tom. It’s the 200/Six.

The 200 Six is the same as the Langley & Zebco Spin Deluxe 830.

Yes it can be removed, but you will no longer have an anti-reverse of any kind. The mechanism is between the rotor and the body.

The following photos are of an 850 but the design, and procedure, is basically the same.

First remove the main shaft by removing the clip in the oscillation block. The pinion tube is pressed into the rotor and there's a C-clip that attaches the tube & rotor to the body behind the pinion, as shown in this photo:

You have to remove it to remove the rotor.

Once the rotor is removed it will look something like this:

The brass dog is attached with a small screw & nut. The screw is inside the rotor. The slot in the dog is for a vinyl/rubber tab that controls the movement of the dog.

You can play around with removing the dog and/or the trip spring on the body to see if you get what you are trying to accomplish.

I'm not fond of this design but I wouldn't want to use a reel that didn't have some sort of anti-reverse.

Thanks for the details, Tom. I’d like an AR, but not if it can’t be turned off. Neat reel. When it comes in I’ll see if I can figure something out.

My question about value has to do with how common the A&F versions are, and therefore whether I should modify it or not. Would that be sacrilegious? Should I pick on a Langley or Zebco version? This A&F appears to be is vgc to ec.

I forgot to comment on the values, sorry. They're all the same with regards to the mechanics of each comparable model. The A&Fs usually bring a little more money. I guess it's because there aren't near as many of them out there & some people collect A&F stuff. They're not any better quality than the Langleys or Zebcos.
