ORCA Has Just Passed It's 30 Year Anniversary

Post by RonG »

This has kinda sneaked up on us. Last January marked 30 years since Mike Nogay published ORCA's first newsletter. Boy, we've really come a long way since then. Sit back and enjoy the ride. We have a great group of members that's making this happen.

To see a copy of the first newsletter, click on the link below.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY FELLOW ORCANS!

It was interesting to read that first newsletter again, thanks for posting it Ron. There are a lot of members on there that I sure miss.

I remember being at an NFLCC regional show at the Holiday Inn out on East Broad St. in Columbus Ohio. I was hanging with Charlie Price when Mike walked up and the three of us started lamenting the fact that there weren't very many reels at the show for us reel collectors to ogle. Mike brought up the idea that we should start a reel collecting club because most of the shows around the country at the time were so lure oriented. We discussed printing a newsletter, having an annual show and how much the membership dues should be. When we decided on the $10.00 figure for dues both Charlie and I dug into our wallets and we both handed Mike a Hamilton. I got my bill out a little faster than Charlie did which, I guess, makes me the first paid ORCA member.

It has been, and still is, one of my greatest pleasures being a member of ORCA now and for the past 30 years. The reels I have seen, held, cranked, taken apart and put back together, taken apart and couldn't put back together, drooled on, purchased, didn't purchase, wish I had purchased ... even the ones I wish I hadn't purchased ... its all been a blast. But the best part of belonging to ORCA is the people that I have met along the way, many of whom have become some of my closest friends and favorite fishing buddies. I am in constant awe of the amount of research that my fellow ORCANS have done over the past 30 years on so many different reels and I'm always impressed and inspired by the willingness of these fellow ORCANS to share their hard won knowledge with others who seek their help.

So, Happy 30th Anniversary ORCA and here's to 30 more!!

Lol. Brian is my first cousin but I imagine he was a cool high school teacher. Our dads were brothers. His pops, my Uncle Bill, was a true war hero- he flew 48 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Here is a good link: https://airandspace.si.edu/support/wall ... y-usaf-ret

As for ORCA, it has been the reared and raised and fine-tuned by many, many people and I predict it will only get better with the great leadership the club has now.

Embarrassed not to be on that first roster list.

Too many buddies on that list that aren't around any longer.

I have original copies of ORCA newsletters 2,3, and 4 where we continued to publish new members in 1990. When I dig them out I’ll scan them to Ron. I’m sure you’re in one of those early issues, Dean.

I did find the 1992 membership roster. We were up to 179 members, and there is a listing for a “vest pocket collectibles” guy from Connecticut.

All of the ORCA reel news were scanned for the library, including the first four issues.
