I talked to that guy a few weeks ago. According to him that reel was spray painted by a Florida shark club back in the 80s

Are you sure it hasn't been painted? I see there is a box. Does the box indicate a color? I would have to open the reel to verify the plate is indeed orange. Some charters painted their reels to discourage sticky fingers. If this one has been painted, they went to the trouble of removing hardware. If it's truly orange bakelite, you have a unique rig there. I've never seen a UT orange Penn before...plenty of A&M maroon ones, yes. Find die hard Longhorn alumni fishermen who bleed orange and you've got a fun auction. It could be a special order or a gifted one-off.
I'll bet another Penn lover will chime in before long.

There's a smaller orange one on the FB Penn page at the moment. I agree with SB...pull a plate and see what the innards tell you!

And..I was writing my reply while you posted yours. Didn't see it until after I pulled the trigger! Well, we were all paying attention and "talking" at the same time.

Never put my eyes on a red 9/0. Bright red or dark maroon?

Re: Penn 12/0 orange sideplates
I would say the orange 12/0 is painted. If it is not, it would be very rare.
As is the red 9/0. I have only seen one and it is a beauty. I know the owner and it is not for sale. Probably will never be for sale. But it is good to have a few photos of it, so here you go.

Re: Penn 12/0 orange sideplates
My Rockport buddy Jim sold this unfished, boxed 4/0 on corpusfishing last year.
fwiw, when he consulted me about selling, ORCA was the first place I recommended.
