Question About New Penn Reel
Question About New Penn Reel
Hello, I picked up a new reel this week and wanted to know if someone can give me a little more info about it and when it was manufactured. I dont see the 117L or 14/0 on the stamp nor anywhere else on reel like the pics I have seen online. It was spooled with 1020 yards of 130 lb mono yesterday. I was told it was a 14/0 and by the line capacity It appears to be. Also wanted to get recommendations of what rod to get targeting sharks generally in High Island or North Padre Island. I love the look of the reel but have always wanted to drop baits far-out for the chance of catching a large shark. Thanks for any info you can share, this is the first reel I have owned larger than a 6/0.

Re: Question About New Penn Reel
Isn't it stamped "SENATOR"?

Re: Question About New Penn Reel
The only thing I can figure here is Penn had manufactured a generic logo plug for the new 14/0 reels being made today. All the older Penn reels always put the reel size into the logo. I remember talking with the Director of Product Development at Penn in 2019. He told me they were going to use vintage first gen plugs from the 1930's for the new 12/0's, he did not mention the new 14/0's. Looks like they made a new plug for the 14/0 that could be used for any size.

Re: Question About New Penn Reel
That is a modern manufactured 14/0. Penn is currently using the old first year Senator logo that was seen on the 1936-39 9/0 on all 14/0s manufactured today.

Re: Question About New Penn Reel
Of course Chris is correct! That is the answer. Penn went back in time to the era of the first 9/0 when it was just a Senator 115.That is a modern manufactured 14/0. Penn is currently using the old first year Senator logo that was seen on the 1936-39 9/0 on all 14/0s manufactured today.
This is a late 1930's 9/0.

Re: Question About New Penn Reel
Incredibly good job in hiding the reel seat, but appears to be a 7 o’clock reel, which also fits with later vintage.

No John, look at the upper lug. The reel I posted is a 5 O'clock reel. First Generation 9/0.Incredibly good job in hiding the reel seat, but appears to be a 7 o’clock reel, which also fits with later vintage.

Re: Question About New Penn Reel
Looks 5 o’clock to me Mike
As far as OPs reel is concerned, If I had to guess, I would assume the spool is black anodized aluminum, again a feature of the 14/0 and 12/0 reels being made today.
Look at the ball bearing caps in the side plates. Blank. That’s what they look like today. Older vintage reels had “Ball Bearing” stamped into the caps.
