Shakespeare musky reel

Post by gadabout »

What Shakespeare reel model would be a good match for a Shakespeare Musky Wonderod?

Nah, I think the service reels were intended as boat/trolling reels. This would have to be a casting reel.

I agree with Paul, a Service reel. What other Shake reel is as big as a Service reel. You almost need to have a larger reel for that type of rod.
Collect mostly Ky style reels; Meek, Heddon, Horton, Pflueger Redifor and Worth, etc.

How about a model 1939 Wondereel? Same size as the KTC Musky.

Darnit, I wish someone would write that Shakespeare book! I've had a heavier duty shakes reel in the past that I always thought was underrated for collector value. It was Nickel Silver and might have been a Jupiter, except that I am almost sure it was a levelwind reel. I always considered it a probable reel for Great Lakes fishing or saltwater, but figured the former because of the lack of salt burn anywhere on the examples I had. Did they make an early NS version of the Service before they went to that cheesy plated finish?? I donated one to the ORCA silent auction last time we were in Frankfort, I believe.

I have many of the Shakespeare catalogs (all from 1920 on), which I believe you do, as well. That would be a good start, knowing all the models that were actually produced.

OK seriously, going to get the Shakespeare crew together in the new year. Been too long not to get a book out.

I think so too. I don’t own a Service, but do have the Pflueger Rocket and Coxe 65C Do-All. I believe both have an AR but do not freespool. Both are awaiting attention so I haven’t tried to cast with either.

Me, too. For what it's worth, I have a photo database of some of the earlier Shakespeares that I've handled.

IMHO, the Shakespeare reels are the most interesting and under reported reels. I love the fact that they were used in tournaments in narrow spool from 1900 to 1990. This would be a challenging book indeed.

Just a book on their regular models would be a daunting task. Another two books could be written just on their trade reels. And Kalamazoo Tackle reels. And Shakespeare-Noris reels...And John Inglis Shakespeare reels. And...

Don't go about it half cocked, it needs to include spinners, open and closed face, fly reels and the acquisition of Pflueger. Try to remember, as challenging as it gets sometimes, there's more than one facet to this reel collecting addiction.
Love those Open Face Spinning Reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco)
