Wanted: Trowbridge (Boston) reel

Post by Richard Lodge »

I'm looking for one of the small brass or nickel plated "winches" (little single action reels) marked Trowbridge, Boston, in good condition with clear writing, if anyone has one they want to part with. Looking to expand my very small collection of reels sold by Boston tackle dealers in the 19th century. Thanks!

I don't have one but it reminds me of the time I tried to buy one on ebay. It was a nice nickel plated multiplier. I think it was over $150 because it was in great condition and Boston reels are never cheap. After about 3 weeks I still hadn't received the reel and the tracking number showed it had not yet been received by the post office. I sent a couple messages to the seller with no response. Out of curiosity I googled the seller's name and hometown and I found a recent police report saying he was arrested for burglary. Of course ebay refunded my money but I was bummed that I didn't get my Trowbridge.

Richard- I looked at every reel table at Ft. Wayne and did not see a Trowbridge. Might be a Midwest thing...

Thanks for looking, Mike. I bet the Trowbridge family swooped through earlier and bought them up. :bricks:

Richard, that's actually true in at least one case.

How so, Steve? I know there is/was an ORCA member named Trowbridge a few years ago.

I assume he collected reels in the family name, yes? I always thought it would be great if he did and wrote a piece on Trowbridge for The Reel News.

I hope you're not waiting for a piece on the Vernon Deluxe reel.

It's my understanding you're still working on that one, although it's been said you have the finest collection of Vernon Deluxe since Mount Vernon was built.

There's no such thing as a fine collection of Vernon Deluxe (as you'll read in the upcoming article). There are boring collections, ignored collections, recycled collections, et al., but nothing fine.
Meanwhile, be reminded that many of the teeny Trowbridge reels were made by Kopf and are marked with that foot patent date. That might account for the apparent spike in prices.

Indeed. The Kopf Effect. Something to do with Henry Caldwell, methinks. (cough... cough...)

Thanks, Robin. Saw that one. Too much wear, too many dollars.
