This is a very early extra heavy-duty version of the Coxe big game reel. These reels sold for quite a premium in their day and are considered extremely scarce today.

The reel is engraved with the owners initials - M.C.F. - Max C. Fleischman

Max C. Fleischman from Santa Barbara California was a businessman, philanthropist, fisherman, hunter and explorer recognized by the Royal Geographic Society of London, the Arctic Club, and the Explorers Club. An avid fisherman and member of the Tuna Club on Catalina Island, he is mentioned in the 1st edition of the "History of the Tuna Club Book" published in 1948. Fleischman fished all over the world fishing with the like's of J.A. Wilborn, a fishing companion of Zane Grey whom Grey dubbed the "Lone Angler" in his fishing books.

Max Charles Fleischman was born in Riverside Ohio in 1877 and to quote from the book about Fleischman's life, "A Gentleman in the Outdoors - A Portrait of Max C. Fleischman", by Sessions Wheeler -

"Today's American can find Max C. Fleischman's name on plaques in hospitals, libraries, research centers, university buildings, youth centers, and other institutions of benefit to mankind. Some who notice the name may wonder what kind of man willed his fortune for such purposes. But if they inquire about him, all they will probably learn is that his wealth originated from the Fleischman Yeast empire."

The jacket goes on to read - "Using four of Fleischman's early diaries, Wheeler has written about the Major's 1906 expedition in an auxiliary sailing ship to within 600 miles of the North Pole, his safari into British East Africa in 1907, his rugged pack trip into the Cassiar Mountains of British Columbia in 1908, and his hunting trips to the Alaskan Islands in 1909. Diaries of many of Fleischman's other expeditions to various regions of Africa, Outer Mongolia, and other great parts of the earth have been lost, but with information provided by the American Museum of Natural History, the 1936 Fleischman - Clark expedition to Indochina is recounted."

And the jacket continues - "While living in Santa Barbara California, from 1921 to 1934, Fleischman was a highly respected, generous, and conscientious resident. The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, for which he served as president from 1934 -1947, became one of his strong interests."

Quite a fellow and a pillar of the Santa Barbara community. This books recounts many of his fishing trips and is included in the sale with the reel.
