Anti-reverse spring - Penn no. 9
OK...I give up! How do you replace the anti-reverse pawl spring on a Penn No. 9. This has the flat, angled spring, not a coil spring.

Wayne, You'll have to try it both ways to see which way makes sense for that little bugger, but as far as keeping it in place while you use your third hand to slide the drive gear into place while holding the dog out of the way with your fourth hand, I have had pretty good luck using a big glob of grease...you can usually then jock things around without it hitting the carpet.
Needless to say, I was thrilled when Penn later figured out to mount that anti-reverse dog as a spring-loaded fixture on the plate that holds the drive gear!
