How can I get this pin out?

This is an old J.C. Higgins 779.31500 that I'm trying to clean up. I wanted to pull the spindle out, but the little pin that sticks out of the end of the spindle doesn't seem to want to come out. Any suggestions?

Any chance its threaded? You might try taped up pliers and give it a lefty-loosey twist
