Drag Washers Stuck In Main Gear

Post by fishhead »

I have a reel where the drag washers are stuck inside the main gear from corrosion and the main gear is stainless steel. Is there a trick in getting those drag washers out of the main gear? I know there is an easy way and there is a hard way. What is the easiest way?

Put the whole thing in mineral spirits and leave overnight. This usually loosens up the grease holding the washers in the gear. They might come out by tapping but likely you will have to fish them out with the tip of a nail or something sharp. They will need to be replaced if a user reel, so damage to drag washers is not an issue. Hope this helps!

So mineral spirits? Can you use acetone, CLR (calcium, lime, rust), white vinegar or kerosene? What works the best?

Of that lot, go with kerosene. Acetone would probably work but so volatile, it's not the best.... And certainly the most harmful to snort and biggest fire danger.

Great, Paul! If you haven't registered yet, do so asap and there are still a few rooms available at the convention rate and tables through Roger... Deadline looms!

REGISTRATION FOR CONVENTION IN SAN DIEGO

Post by fishhead »

I am just going to drive down there from my home in Temecula. I am going to show up, shop and hang out with the members. Do I have to buy tickets to go in to the convention? Let me know.

Thanks, Paul

Paul, Registration for the convention is $25 and you need to be a member to attend the activites. If you are not a member of ORCA, it's also $40 for a new membership.

Paul,

Your keyboard is cap-locked, you may want to unlock it. It makes your messages look like you're excited. I know he's a great leader but is reminiscing with President Elder that exhilarating? :P

Yes John is a good guy for sure. I use all caps because it is easier to type and I am old and need reading glasses. LOL

LOL..... You are in good company in this crowd, Paul!

Yes, Brian, Paul is a member in good standing, so it's just the $25 registration fee unless you want a sale table, Paul. Get out all your antique rigs and get practiced up for the casting contests!

I would guess a good number of us fit into that category. :)
