Gear Chatter

Post by LEF »

Is there any consensus on how to quiet down gears. I get a hum out of the aluminum gear and the anti reverse dog in a Mitchell 300, or general hum/click in the main gear of Penn 209s etc. Just wondering if there is any certain grease that will quiet down gear noise with aluminum gears. I have used a light coating of Penn, Daiwa, and Hot Sauce. Thinking some marine or Lithium gease might be thick enough to obviate the noise. Any advice would be appreciate.

BTW what is the cause of noisy gears after they are cleaned with an organic solvent such as WD-40?

Thanks
