EVH 4/0 back from the dead
I've done a bunch of these by now, but this one was a particularly sweet rescue. I picked up this 4/0 in Bakersfield for more than it was worth, but the hard rubber was in good shape as were all the screws...don't think it had ever been opened up. EVERYTHING was frozen up...the spindle gear and throwout bearing were stuck to the spool spindle....just a mess. When I finally got into the drag washers, they were just slivers...I don't think they had ever been changed. At any rate, the cleanup was successful, methinks. Here are some before and after pics...er...the befores are on the left you will note that I flipped the foot around. I have seen them both ways, but I think the intent was to have the "long" side forward to provide better leverage:

John,
You have flipped the reel foot in the correct direction. Reel seats on EVH rods have a small screw that would fit into the hole in the reel foot and those that I have seen have the screw in front of the reel. Also model numbers and the serial number on the foot are now facing in the correct direction.

Thanks, Ray! I had come to that conclusion, but had never read anything or heard it justified. ...and thanks, guys, for the kind words. I really find this type of work rewarding, although the time can rarely be justified on a $ basis.

Nice job John! It seems you and I are among those who save these old reels for future generations to enjoy.

Thanks, Jacob/Don! Don, you do beautiful work! Wish i was close enough to go to school on you for lathe and other metalwork. I'm sure you agree that the personal satisfaction from these rescue jobs far surpasses any joy of ownership!
