My most recent save - JVH raised pillar 2:1 Multiplier

Post by sdlehr »

I was looking for a restoration project that would challenge me a few weeks ago and picked up this turn of the century unmarked JVH raised pillar reel on the online auction site. It's a 2:1 turn of the century reel with a 2-1/2" side plate and is 1-15/16" wide. The only mark is a "1/0" on the stand. I probably paid more than it was worth in the condition it was in. This was the good side

It also had a bad side

I turned it into something I will keep in my collection and am looking for an 8-prong spider washer and bearing cover as pictured on p 354 of Don Champion and Todd Larson's tome on JVH.

If anyone has the parts I am searching for, please PM me. I'm also curious about the grasp on this reel, it's not like the straight HR ones I've seen on similar reels from the time, also pictured in the aforementioned book. I don't know if this might mean it isn't original. It's clearly wood, and is shaped more like the grasps on salt water reels of the time.

That turned out pretty nice, Sid. Missing edges are difficult to fix!
Love those Open Face Spinning Reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco)

Nice, Sid! I’ll watch for that spider washer but they vary a lot and aren’t so easy to find!

Thanks for the pats, guys. That bearing cover is much more than that.... it's Julius' patented (1889) adjustable pivot bearing cap. On this model on only the tailplate, but I'm finding ads in which it was also available on the head plate as well.

That's as nice a patch on that end plate as I have ever seen. Nice job Sid!

I believe that the knob is correct for the larger models of that reel (eg. 1/0)
