Mother's Mag & Aluminum Polish Composition/Ingredients

Post by Skip »

Apologize if this information has been posted previously. I did search for it and didn't find it.

I've been enjoying reading the posts on cleaning up old reels. I've used Simichrome polish for many years, first learned of it from a motorcycle magazine article, I think, back in the '60s.

I understand the value of some antiques can be destroyed by over-restoration. I'm a long-time gun collector and the same is true of guns.

I've read here that Simichrome contains ammonia compounds and ammonia can be very hard on brass, so it may not be a good idea to use it if the compounds may come in contact with brass parts.

Fairly recently a pawn shop employee recommended Mother's to me. I've been impressed with it, having used it mostly on knives so far. I know it's been mentioned by several members here after searching. But I haven't seen anyone post on it's ingredients.

Here's a link to the safety data sheet for Mother's. Scroll down to Section 3 for the ingredients. Looks like there are no evil ammonia compounds and the abrasive is aluminum oxide.

I use this on EVERYTHING. It's recommended for brass.

I've found Flitz to be very similar in use to Simichrome. Good stuff. Safety Data sheet shows it does have ammonia compounds, though.

I saw the ammonia designated in the MSDS. However I have never known Flitz to be corrosive to brass.
