Any tricks to removing the handle on a Pflueger Templar 1419 3/4

Post by banzai »

I have a Pflueger Templar 1419 3/4 that I would like to take the handle off to replace the knob. The pic is just a representation of the set up on my reel. I’ve aligned the oil shield and tried to turn the screw. Is it as simple as utilizing more arm strong or is there a method to it? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

I believe if you take that small screw off,the top of the handle will then come off, leaving the screw free to turn with screwdriver....oops...not on that model...but I think the key is to remove the small screw, which is probably keeping the main screw from working loose.

John is right but what you're trying to remove is a nut with knurling on the side. There is supposed to be a curved retainer under the handle that pins into the nut. Once you loosen the small screw, you can pull the pin out and the nut should come off.

Got a spare reel stamped "Pflueger" or a Montague Imperial?

I removed the little dog with the pin from under the handle. Do I use a large screwdriver to remove the center or does the handle unscrew from the shaft? If anyone could provide a pic of the breakdown that might help. Thanks so far.

Yup, just use a large screwdriver to unscrew (lefty loosey)

I tried to get the screw to break loose and only managed to pop off the oil cover exposing the brass screw. I’m afraid that if I put much more pressure on removing the screw, I’ll damage the anti reverse dog. Can I safely apply a small amount of heat without damaging the drag washers or affecting the hard rubber faceplate? Thanks

If you do, maybe applying a soldering iron can help keep the heat concentrated as you definitely don't want to get it near the plates. I'd normally soak the whole reel in vinegar and water to help loosen up everything but your reel looks to be in nice shape.i wouldn't expect it to be stuck that bad.

Hi Brian, Ended up getting some of my gun lubricants and cleaner on the screw and let it sit overnight. Finally got it to break loose this morning. Thanks again for your help and guidance.
