What kind of vinegar?

Post by orourke »

I want to try one of the warm vinegar baths to clean a spool on a newly acquired reel. In the store I find: white vinegar, apple vinegar; cider vinegar. What kind am I supposed to use or does it make any difference at all?

Also noticed that in a past string the bath is only supposed to be finger warm. Does a higher temp mess up the process?

Thanks for any and all help.

I typically use white vinegar, but apple vinegar would probably give your reels than nice fresh, springtime smell and do the same job...all about pH, eh? :D

I just did a googlian follow-up on the post and indications are that vinegar is typically standardized to around 5-6% acetic acid. However, White vinegar is cheaper and can be found up to 13%, so that is preferred for cleaning.

white, household, etc.

The apple shouldn't get that way - drink it with John when it's still cider.

Thanks guys:

Also did a google search and one string said to avoid brown vinegar. As my wife had apple vinegar and it appeared brown, I went to the store and bought some white distilled vinegar. It did the trick.

I've personally never heard of that way to clean a spool? What type of spools is this method used for? Thanks.

If the reel is made in Italy you should use Balsamic Vinegar.
