Looks like it. The very earliest of them were black.
That box label makes me wonder about the boxes that I have with my black 114H reels. Since the black ones are the earliest of them you could assume that they would have the sticker on the box as yours does. My boxes are just a standard blue/white box that say “New 114H” as the model number, no sticker

I've heard it before too but was wondering where the conclusion that the black 114H Senators were the earliest came from.

Got a spare reel stamped "Pflueger" or a Montague Imperial?

The catalog is 1973. Red H series reels were around before that .... roughly 1966 or 1967 as I recall.

It always made sense to me that the black 114h’s were the earliest but I don’t know that to be fact at all. When I toured the Penn plant in Philly a few years ago the guy leading our tour had no knowledge of the black models at all.

Either way I love it you know, but don't know if I'll keep it like this? I want to fish everything I own... I'm not much of a collector of shelfies, but I'll try I guess?

The picture in the catalog shows a RED 114h. The catalog is younger than the reel, maybe the box as well.... I have a few black 114h's that are not in quite as good shape as yours, if you want to trade (not necessarily reel for reel, yours is in better shape and has a box) PM me.

I was testing the waters and got pleasantly surprised, he said he was putting it on a mantle at his summer lake house on Lake Michigan. Evidently grew up using the 6/0 as a child. Thanks, Chris! Darin

The Penn 114H was introduced in 1964. It is a red or maroon reel. It was never supposed to be Black but black versions show up in limited numbers. Basically because at Penn rules were loosely followed at times. Most collectors pay about 25% to 50% more for a nice 114H in black. It is really a modern collectible, who knows where the values go as time goes by? In the 1964 catalog and in the 1964 brochure, the High Speed Senators were Red.

Funny how the reel in the brochure, almost looks like the red color was added after the brochure was printed. My brochure was sold at the Penn 2003 auction, so it comes from the factory and is a very early edition.

Wow, the way that was marketed they really wanted people to know to look for a RED reel. Maybe that was the reason the black disappeared. Just simple Marketing 101.

Yup, they want the new high speed Senators to look different than a regular Senator. I feel it was a smart move. The High Speed Senators sold very well, at least the Red ones did.....<:O)
