For all of you Nottingham collectors out there...

Post by kevinhaney1 »

Here's a new acquisition, an Allcock's of Redditch 4" mahogany reel, probably from the 30s, that is in pristine, unused condition. It has an adjustable drag via the wingnut, the first I've seen on one of these. It's nice to have something that old in such great shape!

I have a few, mostly as a decorative break from metal and HR reels, but I wouldn't qualify as a "collector," though. Haven't seen many as pristine as yours.

I have a similar reel, but it's in kit form at the moment...just one more project on the back burner! So often, you find these with distressed wood parts...mission is to eventually get off the metal lathe long enough to get time on the wood lathe and make new side plates...Milwards:

John, are you sure your example isn’t a rare, cut-down Nottingham tournament caster?

Kevin, that’s the finest vintage mahogany reel I’ve ever seen.

Nice reel Kevin !

Here is a 3.5" version marked "A. W. Gamage, Holborn, EC".

The knobs look to be of bone. The brass work inside is really well done.

These are slick when in really nice condition ...just hard to find them that way.

At first I thought it might be a "Cutaway Salesman Sample".

Hi Kevin yes I have to admit to being a serious collector of Nottingham reels along with a couple of other areas.

I'm sorry to say that the Allcock reel you have have been refurbished. Originally it would have had clear lacquer applied. Also its possibly 1910 to 1930 and would have been made by Rueben Heaton, Smith & Wall or maybe Youngs for retail by Allcock.

I have written a book covering the period 1810 to approx 1880 and I am now working on the follow up.

John

Your reel is a Milward retailed made by Milward in the old David Slater factory in Newark Nottinghamshire.

Interesting where you go with its renovation?

Hi Dean I think your reel was made by Rueben Heaton or Smith & Wall and again its been renovated.

They are really tough to find not renovated. I have two examples which will be in the next book, one lacquered and one with a black matt finish.

For those of you who have not read the book Men of Trent some eye candy

William Dann Nottingham 1830 one of my all time favourite reels such precision.

Another William Dann Brass and Rosewood.

3 3/4 inch brass bound Nottingham winch twin ivory handles on brass handle receivers.

Reverse showing the bras strap back with scalloped edges and adjustable brake screw.

Internal detail showing the brass covered drum flange and adjustable brake pad.

Profile showing the pillared iron drum core with chamfered edges to the spool.

Detail of the foot fixing method and the strap back. The features of this reel indicate that it was possibly made by William Dann of Nottingham

Wow, thanks for the show, Stefan! Just an incredible early reel history Lesson! Feel free to add your book info and where/how it might be purchased, if still in print. I’m sure some of us would be interested in obtaining a copy!

In spite of the condition of my Milward’s, I was really impressed with its construction. They put a lot of technology into a reel most would consider as archaic. My list of projects is long, but I plan to remake the wood parts using some exotic wood that should be beautiful, yet fool no one. I plan to label it as a renovation, nonetheless. The alternative is that someone could come rescue me and take on the project :D
