Older pre Mitchell

Post by Jimbo »

Looking for info on this. Worth, history or interest. I’ve only added a few drops of oil. Works like new.

The handle knob has been replaced if it is the last pre '54 version. A look inside the rotor cop (spool removed) and inside the body for planamatic gearing will tell a better story. Also, a look at the spool (pillared or not) and the drag knob will show if those parts appear to still be original. Late Caps & Mitchell Caps and early 304's are notorious for interchanged/switched parts.

Once you remove the line you'll be able to tell if it has the correct pillared spool. Other than that it appears to be period, i.e. version, correct except for the replaced handle knob. Nice old CAP.

Thanks for the info, I’ll give it a good cleaning and try to locate a grip.

So it looks all original but the thumb grip as you said. Any idea where I can get one? I found the entire handle and grip on eBay for $50. Ouch!

They are very hard to find and quite expensive if you do. I've seen the knob only go for $30 +.
