The Penn Model 712 Cut Away

Post by m3040c »

My latest Penn addition. A reel I have been looking to add to my collection for a very long time. Extremely limited. The 1975 Penn Model 712 cutaway.

Shown for member viewing pleasure.

I know of maybe two others. Mine is from around 1975 when the reel was upgraded by Penn from the plastic to the aluminum spool. The medallion is missing on mine. I have located one but not installed it yet. Here is one of the other ones I know of with the medallion logo in place. This one is earlier than mine, it has the plastic spool, which was used from 1970 to 1973

Thanks guys. Don't know how many of these cut away versions are out there, but I thought it was interesting that one was found with the plastic spool and the other has the metal spool. That puts them into different time spans and shows that these were not only made as early promotional items but were made at later times in their production. The change over from plastic to aluminum spools was around 1974 and then to the "Z" around 1978 where the aluminum spool transitioned to a gold color. So, in terms of the green Model 712, the spool material changed over from plastic to aluminum in the middle of its life span, but most people that like to collect these say that the plastic spool version is harder to find. Possibly more were sold later in their production. I feel this is a very popular size reel that can be used in light saltwater fishing or for chasing larger fish when freshwater fishing.

Great piece. When you think about it, almost every reel collection could use a cut away in the display, if for no other reason than to further educate the public that may view it. To the public eyes, all reels of a type look the same.

I can visualize the day at the Penn factory when the sales dept met with the foreman and the lead machinist. "now Harry, we want to send 10 of these out to our best dealers to illustrate the superior functionality and quality of our spiral gears. Cut away about 1/3 of the reel".

I'm not trying to highjack Mike's thread at all, just expanding Matt's comment.

No worries about Highjacking, adding to the post if fine with me. I have three cut away reels in my collection. Hear is a very Limited production Star model. I know we are about OLD reels here but this reel by Star Rods & Reels is designed by David Martin, former CEO of Penn Reels. This is the Model S8000 and imitates the Penn Spinfisher 700 made by Penn in the 1960's. A large surf, reel it is available in select tackle shops now. I was a bit involved in the early development of the reel, hence the prototype. Star Reels is a part of Star Rods.

On the left is #12 prototype and on the right is one of the very few cut aways made by David Martin.

a very interesting modern reel. It sells for about $180 and is available as the S8000 model seen here and a bit smaller S7000 model.

That Star reel looks amazing.
It has been on the market for a couple of years. A limited number of Limited Edition reels were also made available. It was a fun project. Introducing a new model surf reel in today's market is no easy task. There is some very stiff competition out there. The price range for the reel is between $150 and $180, which makes it kind of affordable.

Thanks, Mike. I love the design. Compact worm gear package and wide spool. If they made FW sizes, that would be my reel.
