Jack Bright's "New" Little Brass Reel

Post by john elder »

Here are pics and a little dialogue from Jack re his latest Show and Tell...Really sweet, Jack!

" Nice Brass Reel, just acquired. 2 1/2" Diam., has a unique raised housing for click, super knurling and a flat reel seat,
a line drawing of almost same reel (this one is minus pillars) is on page 32 of Jim Brown`s "A Treasury of Reels" I`m guessing CA 1870s +/- 10 yrs. Any comments appreciated!"

Jack...is that remnants of bluing/finish on the reel or does it just need a good bath?...I would suppose that initially is was a gun metal shade?

pretty good guess, since the 1871 Allcocks Catalog shows a line drawing of the same reel.

Bath ?

Post by Jack Bright »

John--Just remnants of a heavy patina(accumulated dirt/dust) bathed it for
three hours in the vinegar wash, what you see is what`s left, I kinda like it.
English reel guru John Stephenson thinks it`s of American heritage.

I know John very well. I guess I'll have to copystand the page from Graham Turner. Those are modern hardware store screws, btw.

yes, the spindle probably has clearance over the backplate bushing with the screw holding a keyed drag gear in place.
It's sure a beauty.

Brass Fly reel

Post by Jack Bright »

A big thank you John & Ron for your help. How about a special group of Fly reel groupies in "The Reel News" definitely a minority, but don`t they rule ?

Ron,

Can you please tell me why you believe the screws are new. I have not seen an original of this reel to know if it originally came with brass screws or nickle silver screws. With nickle silver pillars and crank, the reel looks nice with the nickle silver screws and other makers offset them in the same way. Just curiousity. Thanks.

I've seen reels like this one with screws that go all the way through the pillars and into the front plate. If that is the case with this one, I think they are original.

Hi Ed, I was just going by the wide pan heads - look like modern screws. Obviously, I could be wrong.
