Make Reel Nominations for 2018 ORCA Patch

Post by David Lehmann »

We are accepting nominations for the reel to be pictured on the 2018 ORCA patch. At this point, two reels have been nominated: 1) Redifor Beetzel (100th anniversary of patent) 2) Penn saltwater reel. We will put all nominations out for a vote to ORCA members. Make nominations by replying to this post please. Thanks!

2.. A historically significant Penn Reel.. maybe of Mike C's choosing.

Ideas might include:

-First year (ca.1940) 16/0

-First Year (ca.1936) 9/0

-1932 Model F prototype (possibly Penn's first reel), though we may not have a photo, and the reel has no logo

-Maybe all 3 first year reels, models F, K w/star drag, K w/o star drag (as depicted in Penn's 2005 catalog)

-1933 Sea King (No known reels)

-1934 Ocean Side

-75th Anniversary (1982) Penn International 50 Tournament Reel

21 patches so far, and not a single Shakespeare reel. I'd offer either a style "C" or since there has been a great discovery recently, a 40 yard Perfect seems a good choice.

I'll second Jim's Shakespeare nomination! Another possibility is the Rubber Standard, made only in 1901 and quite rare.

In all of the patches, I'll bet there's not a single Mitchell spinning reel ! :)

That's OK, I can deal with it.

ZEBCO 202
A Reel that changed Fishing History
Being very affordable
Easy to use
Nearly Every kid or Grown-up has used seen or know of someone who has
and more importantly a great starter reel for those who are to come to OLD Reel Collecting.
Or define what this New Patch is to Exemplify for the Club Partners and or the qualifying Rules and or Posting/Regulatory stipulations are for this category.
Since I don't have the 21 previous patches nor access to the list knowingly and this Reel or reasonable facsimile thereof has been used or discussed, banned or not qualified previously in this area then PLEASE EXCUSE ME !!!
Or just delete it like a lot of my other recent posts.

Was There a Patch in 1998? If so what was it?. Thought I had most all, can't find that one and never had the 1994 generic one

Both great ideas - sounds like ORCA has a few years of patches covered if we use these nominations. I second each of them.

...not a problem - here is the list
This and other useful ORCA links can be found on this page
never had the 1994 generic one
I'll see if I have a spare Jonathan

If you do Jim I'll buy it from you. Since 1998 is not listed, was one not issued for that year?

Though I've always favored patches honoring centenaries (like the Beetzsel in this case), it's time to give Shakespeare its due. IMHO, Shakespeare's responsibility for the popularization of the level wind was far more revolutionary than any CFSRs. (BTW, we've also neglected both E and F Vom Hofe, among others.)

I would vote with Shakespeare for coming year, then put rest in a hat and pick now for the next several years... all great picks!

2019 is anniversary year for Zebco. As we will likely use a Zebco reel for 2019, this nomination will go on hold, if that's OK.
