Name that untuna!

Post by Steve »

A friend of mine caught one of these recently, said it would have been a record for the location if he had registered it.

I don't know if it has a Hawaiian name but they are pretty common around here. We call them trumpet fish and they get up to around 3ft long. By-catch when we are targeting jacks. Pretty harmless but they are slimey as heck!

Bingo, Brian! This Atlantic version is a blue-spotted cornetfish (vs. trumpetfish), better known to fishmongers and restaurateurs as Fistularia commersonii. Despite what Phil said, these things may live in swamps, for all I know, but they're not people.
