Fish live here
but wait, I'm getting ahead of myself.
You gotta start somewhere
hey, it gets better.
Curtis got the next one for the morning
This is already a pretty good wade-hike-wade, but I would have settled for this beauty for my fish for the day
waded in the hundred-year-old dam and caught 3 of these right away
Called Tony upriver and put him on the spot - the hundred-year-old dam is to the left
a nice view from the skinny water at the top of the hundred year old dam pool
Curtis near the top
And after he passed me up, looking upriver from the next riffle
looking downriver at Jake
still farther upriver, the weir above is the end of the wade
but I didn't hang, I beat back down to the cypress tunnel
and got my bass of the day
and not a bad way to end
ever seen a red-ear with his head as big as your hand?

Nice shots, Ron. Are you sure that's a redear? Sure looks like a crappie. And is your big bass a Guadalupe?

Re: Fish live here
unfortunately, my big bass is a Guadalupe/smallmouth hybrid.
Lepomis microlophus Look at the little mouth, it's a shellcracker.
Here's a "smaller" one
something else that is cool about big red ears - every one I have ever caught (and released) has stayed at my feet to watch me until I left its territory.
here's Curtis' best lily pad bass
and great color on a yellow belly
a little lepomis gulosus warmouth, a species you don't see posted too often
Curtis also aimed his camera at me with a little yellow belly and a lonsdale stogie

Re: Fish live here
we always have a good time.
This is some of the least-abused water in Texas, because the access is not obvious. A few people float in, Hill Country Fly Fishers (FFF) wade here, and also police litter at the adopted road crossing.
It's a near-chest wade to get to the first tailout, and I know the way (like all my life).
After you get down to the confluence of the forks, the landowners are open to fishermen - even though they have no trespassing signs posted on every tree. They treat the hike-able bank as a neighborhood common, and it looks like a summer camp. They also know we pick up trash instead of leave it. When we were leaving and got back to the crossing, families were there with their bbq grills, and our parking was valuable real estate.
We traveled a long way for this, Curtis 120 miles and the rest of us 80, but we knew what to expect and were not disappointed.
There is so much good water on this wade, you can't fish it all. You skim over it because you want to see what's next. We fished 5 people and 3 kayaks came down, and there was room for everybody.
Long ago I passed counting fish - any fish are gravy. The fishing, the day, the water and especially the friends are what's important. We had a great lunch at Mamacitas in Kerrville. I should have taken a photo of my chile relleno - their Tampico sauce is like a stew with coarse-cut veggies.

It's 900 miles across the state in two directions - we can hide a lot.

Re: Fish live here
And fast response time too. I was there back around 1963. My middle brother graduated from S,M,U. and Perkins Theological Seminary. He got married down there too. Don't think I went to that? Soon after he moved to Ca. I drove my 1955 Buick to Dallas for him in 1964 and rode the Greyhound back to In. That I do remember about Texas. Longest bus ride ever!
