did every US state make reels???
a yo yo reel!

stev what kind of reel?

Milt,
Here's a pic of a Kerr cradle baitcaster with the R. P. Mfg. name in the oval stamping. I've seen other Kerrs without the mark, so it may have been produced in more than one factory. Since the oil caps are Shakespearian, I'd guess the thing was made by adding Shakespeare-made parts to a cradle made by R. P.

The doodad is based on Robert Kerr's patent. He was from Dayton.

Standart Brothers
Milt, check out page 19 of my book about the Standart Brothers reel of Detroit. I didn't list it because it was made by Montague. We're only listing manufactureres, correct? Do we include companies that only sold trade reels (like Pennell)? I guess that should be clarified. Jim

I sat down and updated my list before lunch, then took and nap and then fired up the computer to post the list. Hmmmm... It's already outdated. Anyway, the list on the Fishing Reel Research site has been updated as per Steve's post at the top of this page. I noted the following: Washington = 17 makers, Michigan = 20, NY = 40. There are 21 states not represented yet. One of them just happens to be KENTUCKY.

I think that Steve qualifies for the Kentucky listings
since he retired from the royalties generated by the
book on said subject that he co-wrote and I am
waiting for a reply from Bill Stuart on the unknown
Florida reels. (if there are any.)
And To Phil: I don’t know where this hobby would
be if it wasn’t for your willing participation. I was on
the phone last night with a fellow reel collector and
this thread came up in the conversation. We both
talked about your Web Sites with all the projects
and what benefits for a collector could be found there
by both seasoned (geezers) and new collectors alike.
I am sure that it doesn’t go unnoticed by others but
the time and effort you put into this is way past the
responsibilities one should have to endure as just being
a member.
And Steve didn't get off the hook either. (bet your ears
were burning!) Yes, we discussed you too!
With his knowledge and willingness to help,
it almost makes it
impossible to not get an answer to your questions form
either one or both of you. I will admit that Steve takes
the advantage somewhat because he usually produces
a picture! To both of you, and the other very knowledgeable
people that post here, I think I speak for all of us other
peons, Thanks for making this a very enjoyable place to
visit and learn.

Do we have Maine? (reminds me of that licence plate game) Van Staal.
If you go to their web site they have a breakdown on how the annual service is done. Note the use of "Simple Green" cleaner for the plastic parts and brake cleaner for the metal parts.
Milt, I'm afraid I don't have a diagram or instructions on the Lashmaster but R.D. may have applied for a patent (Steve might know). The reel was to have been called the "Kingcaster". R.D. objected because that name wasn't descriptive enough. There were problems with the gears. They took it to a trade show and saw a similar device that worked better and was already patented. The company consisted of R.D. Hull, Willie Crawford, and five investors each of whom contributed $7500.
I now realize that the Zero Hour Bomb Co. came into being because of a man named Jasper who didn't go by Jasper and was saved by another man named Jasper who didn't go by Jasper. The former being Jasper (J.a.p) Morrison and the latter being Jasper R. Dell (R.D.) Hull. What a coincidence!
Regards,
Clinton

Another from New York
ORCA member Tom DuRose, who wrote an excellent article in the July 2002 issue of the Reel News, reminded me to add the Keene Valley Engineering company of New York to our growing list.
Tom is having trouble posting here, perhaps an AOL issue.
