Nebraska had one more: Air-Lite Plastics Corp. in Omaha made a horrible little plastic spin-cast reel, circa 1970s (I think). The previously identified Nebraska maker, Good-All Mfg. Co., was located in Ogallala, NE.

Milt,
Here's a pic of a Kerr cradle baitcaster with the R. P. Mfg. name in the oval stamping. I've seen other Kerrs without the mark, so it may have been produced in more than one factory. Since the oil caps are Shakespearian, I'd guess the thing was made by adding Shakespeare-made parts to a cradle made by R. P.

Image

The doodad is based on Robert Kerr's patent. He was from Dayton.

Hey Milt. Does it look like this? These were made in Ark.

I think calling this a "Fishing Reel" is streching it somewhat!

Life is GOOD! Harvy attach one of these to your toe, take a nap the fish will wake you up, NOW GO FISH! Col. Milton Lorens aka SWIM JIG in a OHIO TUNDRA temp on the up rise its now 18 degrees!

Standart Brothers

Post by Jim Madden »

Milt, check out page 19 of my book about the Standart Brothers reel of Detroit. I didn't list it because it was made by Montague. We're only listing manufactureres, correct? Do we include companies that only sold trade reels (like Pennell)? I guess that should be clarified. Jim

I sat down and updated my list before lunch, then took and nap and then fired up the computer to post the list. Hmmmm... It's already outdated. Anyway, the list on the Fishing Reel Research site has been updated as per Steve's post at the top of this page. I noted the following: Washington = 17 makers, Michigan = 20, NY = 40. There are 21 states not represented yet. One of them just happens to be KENTUCKY.

anti backlash

Post by SWIM JIG »

:) 8) :!: :?:  LOOKS like the guy took a slack line on the deal also in Lens book page 2 he shows the reel etc. Jim, I woild say list all reels and or their other names with a marking made by PENNELL etc, that will defuse the (INDIAN REEL PROBLEM) also if a larege trade reel co had plants ie assembly shops or manf. capabilities in other States. ( a example I am now working on a(X-pert modle 1 N.B.L. no 3121700) this reel is a combonation Of Bronson amd Langly , the leval wind worm is bronso it will also work in a JACOXE reel the pawl is 2 ended like bronson, the rear bering cap - adj is Langly. screws are bronson Shakespere, the spool gear is bronson so is the bridge. When we work on reels that use several different companies parts 1 its well known the big fish sells to the small fish that sells to us ( jokingly SUCKERS) Oh yes forgot to mention the handle nut is Shakespere. Jim thats why I see it as important to do this listing, few if any reel companies after 1908 only made for themselfs, now this is going to bring down a lot of words from the rest of the folks-- Bring it ON ! I think that Steve qualifies for the Kentucky listings
since he retired from the royalties generated by the
book on said subject that he co-wrote and I am
waiting for a reply from Bill Stuart on the unknown
Florida reels. (if there are any.)
And To Phil: I don’t know where this hobby would
be if it wasn’t for your willing participation. I was on
the phone last night with a fellow reel collector and
this thread came up in the conversation. We both
talked about your Web Sites with all the projects
and what benefits for a collector could be found there
by both seasoned (geezers) and new collectors alike.
I am sure that it doesn’t go unnoticed by others but
the time and effort you put into this is way past the
responsibilities one should have to endure as just being
a member.
And Steve didn't get off the hook either. (bet your ears
were burning!) Yes, we discussed you too!
With his knowledge and willingness to help,
it almost makes it
impossible to not get an answer to your questions form
either one or both of you. I will admit that Steve takes
the advantage somewhat because he usually produces
a picture! To both of you, and the other very knowledgeable
people that post here, I think I speak for all of us other
peons, Thanks for making this a very enjoyable place to
visit and learn.

Do we have Maine? (reminds me of that licence plate game) Van Staal.

If you go to their web site they have a breakdown on how the annual service is done. Note the use of "Simple Green" cleaner for the plastic parts and brake cleaner for the metal parts.

Milt, I'm afraid I don't have a diagram or instructions on the Lashmaster but R.D. may have applied for a patent (Steve might know). The reel was to have been called the "Kingcaster". R.D. objected because that name wasn't descriptive enough. There were problems with the gears. They took it to a trade show and saw a similar device that worked better and was already patented. The company consisted of R.D. Hull, Willie Crawford, and five investors each of whom contributed $7500.

I now realize that the Zero Hour Bomb Co. came into being because of a man named Jasper who didn't go by Jasper and was saved by another man named Jasper who didn't go by Jasper. The former being Jasper (J.a.p) Morrison and the latter being Jasper R. Dell (R.D.) Hull. What a coincidence!

Clinton

Geezer et al.,
Jim Brown published a list of New York reelmakers three times in ORCA bulletins, updating it over the years. The latest version I'm aware of was on page 8 of the New Year, 2000, issue of Reel News. Looks like at least 75 entries.

new mebers may miss that

Post by SWIM JIG »

:( :o  :? :!: :?:  steve, anyone signing up after 2000 would mis that! It would be my thoughts 1 to relist or update some things in each issue! 2 when a new member is sent their first (REEL NEWS) send a list of back issues with it, thus if we list a item then the new member can order a copy of a back issue, yes its work however as we are the teachers the students must have the tools to learn! I relize we dont have a large budget, so we make do what we can. Once we do this then new members in my simple thoughts will renew! not drop out! and then they will in turn tell their friends and sign up new members! And then things happen, we may get new column writers? I would like to see a book by ORCA with just reel facts and pics or drawings with a history , it could be sold for a resonable cost, We must go foward ! JUST thinking out loud again! Col. M. Another from New York

Post by Jim Schottenham »

ORCA member Tom DuRose, who wrote an excellent article in the July 2002 issue of the Reel News, reminded me to add the Keene Valley Engineering company of New York to our growing list.
Tom is having trouble posting here, perhaps an AOL issue.
