Ever since christmas, when I recieved a JVH (B-Ocean I think) I've been wondering how to plead ignorance and have someone explain what the 2/0 on the foot means. Thank you very much for this thread. I'm still ignorant, but a bit less so.

Clinton

Dave, that was a nice thing to say. But let's not forget that you started all this and that some of us, inspired by an otherwise barren holiday weekend, just went off on an irrelevant tangent and have been babbling incessantly ever since.

Clinton, we hope your book will include a chapter on the oft-rumored, mid-twentieth-century association between Julius Vom Hofe, Jr., and R. D. Hull. It's a whole new avenue for research.

?????

(gasp) OK, where are my shoes? That one just blew me right out of them! Father and R.D. worked together hand in glove so he might know something about that, but maybe not since we didn't get here until '65.

(hmmm) I haven't wanted to bother Otto with a bunch of inane questions, but this is hardly inane. He's probably the best bet. Ralph might also know or perhaps R.D.'s sons. I will definitely look into this. Does anyone know members of the Vom Hofe family? Perhaps we could work the thread from both ends. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

BTW: I'm going to try very hard to attend the convention this year and I have told father that I'm going to 'kidnap' him and bring him along. This could become more than interesting.

Clinton

I screwed up again. I heard long ago that Julius Vom Hofe made a hull bunch of reels. Must have misunderstood. This is what happens when you get senile, partly deaf, and, to everyone else's relief, dumb.

I talked to father this afternoon and my JVH did come from the personal collection of R.D. Hull (wrong handle and all). R.D. definitely had saltwater on his mind when he designed the 55 (in the mid 50s). I knew that he didn't work with the Vom Hofes (that's my story and I'm sticking with it) but the tackle industry isn't that big compared to others. When Ralph Lafferty left as president of Zebco he did so to become president of Garcia (small world). These people met at the trade shows so it's concieveable that anyone could have known anyone else at any given time.

Warmest Regards,
Clinton

:D :) 8) :!: :?:  Clinton, You recal me asking if you or the company had a factory digram on the LASH MASTER REEL, well at the Mt Pilieier OHIO show last week end , I found one, None other than Our ORCA vp BILL MUTH had some for sale, if you like and send me your mailing address I will make a copy of it and snail mail it to you! I can honestly say after seeing the diagram its a rather easy reel to work on however without the elusive diagram I would recomend DONT TAKE IT APART! Also HOW is the book comming along, we in REEL land are waiting with strong intrest! As for the 55 zevco you are correct that it was indeed desined for SALT WATER fishing, with all the Stanless covers and other salt water resistance parts it has in it, I have had them where they had been not only used in salt water they had been submeraged for a few days and with some new screws, and springs I was able to put them back into service! They dont build them like that anymore! and that goes for most every brand of reel today! Col. Milton lorens aka SWIM JIG in 24 degree OHIO

I'll be sending you an e-mail shortly! (does that answere your question?) The 55 only had one problem which you are probably aware of, the spools are a bit thin and so can break. The book has been coming along slowly as I have been tasked with the responsibility of creating the curriculum for teaching the linux operating system which has never been done at our campus before. Good news! I'm almost done with that so I can get to the book and just today I finally bought a digital camera. I promise not to flood the board with pictures, but I will need help with pictures of the reels that I don't have. Of the over 200 reels in my collection more than 20 are prototypes and only about half are Zebco. BTW: I've scanned the production sheets from 1949-1985 and I'll attach a copy to the e-mail (mother always taught us kids to share).

thin spools?

Post by SWIM JIG »

:o :? 8) :!: :?:  Clinton, I found that out the hard way, however that Paul Winsted got some somwhere and they are consideraby thicker and are not that pot metal that the originals are made of. Posible up grade? I find no mention of that fact in My factory manuals---hmmm, I thought they may have been aftermarket except they are in factory pkg. simlar to the 66 model spools. and they have a anodised finish on them. Will look foward to the email thanks Clinton, your Ohio conection Col. M LORENS aka SWIM JIG

I agree with Dave O`Rourke, very enlightening and helpful, but as the
old man on "Moonstuck" said, 'I`m confused' Oh!, and Steve you are becoming a master computer craftsman. A year, or was it two years ago,
you furnished us with an unforgettable reel Christmas tree, and now this
reely nice goose.
