With a shoulder hardness clipped onto the top lugs and the fisherman putting his back into pulling, there is more strain on the frontward brace.

Because of the materials available at the time, my sense is that rods did not have the life expectancy we take for granted today. Hardwood and cane become brittle over time, the action becomes soft and they are pone to cracking and splitting. So, while a reel may have been considered a long term investment that would last a lifetime, one would expect to have to replace rods every few seasons. This is especially true for big game rods. Their ephemeral nature would have influenced the craftsmanship and attention to detail going into rod building and inconsistencies in materials would have led to inconsistencies in design and construction.

I'm not sure. I was told by a friend that Elvis is seen using a Bronson No.26 "Invader" in one of his movies. I thought that would be an amazing photo to add to the Bronson website. Didn't find the Bronson during a search, but did find the Penn photo.
