on that note steph, it may have been his collegue john stevenson who told me about the buyers lined up. john mulluck said yesterday that john s will ring me monday. when i spoke to john s he was really enthusiastic about it, but ive only actually met john m, but spoke on the phone to john s. john m said john s is the expert and will view the reel on monday morning and give me a more realistic reserve price for the auction, than he has already given me.

If some guy in midtown Honolulu, Hawaii knows about this reel, I'm sure the collector from Bavaria has already seen it too and asked the seller where it's gone. Somehow I was mistaken that M&M were already including an ebay component in their auctions but I imagine they will one day, considering many others are.

Well, Sharon, if you don't end up carting home a lot of cash, I can't think of anyone else who could've got better entertainment value in return for a crusty old reel

here you go, this is a cut and paste of what i posted about the story behind the reel... think yourselves lucky this is the short version lol!

my fellow members of parrot link have enjoyed reading this post so far and Brian (edited) has a few admirers!

here you go:

(start the quote)

well, firstly i must apologise for not posting so often for the last week or so but i have had heaps going on.

mother in law has finally got a bungalow, so we are in the process of reducing her stuff so she can go from a hugh three bedroom house to a more comfortable bungalow with a lovely front and back garden and shower room cos she cant get in/out of the bath.

daves dad died four years ago next week and she has strugled for these last few years as she is far from sound health herself. she has a strong family around her, and everybody has been helping, dave more than most.

when his dad died dave did everything. despite being the youngest, he was the one who has carried her through the last years... dropping everything for her and being there when he has been needed (even i have to admit,... he has annoyed me at times lol!) where his brother (older and childless) or his sisters (comfortable lives... both have grown up children) have refused to help or not offered, dave has been there, no arguments, just does it as he says she aint gonna be here for long and dad would have wanted him too.

anyway, clearing the house out has been a chore. dave went round the other day, and his dad was a horder to say the least (5 unworking tv's in the loft?!) and collected anything and everything. when he got there he was surprised to see all his dad';s RAF pictures had gone, and all his brass bells and ornaments had gone. he asked his mum where... she said oh, daisy (names changed to protect identity etc) took them and lizzy took them. dave said so what have i got to remember dad by then? there was nothing left. he came home and i felt so sory for him, cos he does everything for her.

but we thought hey ho, what does it matter? he is still there for his mum, so thats what matters. he was clearing out an old bin bag a few days ago round there and his brother came across a fishing reel. his brother asked whether he thought it was worth keeping. dave said nah, its just another bit of old brass... chuck it back in the bag.

something told dave that he shouldnt throw it back in, so he kept it.

so (deep breath lol!), i put it on ebay on tuesday nite... after researching ebay for the makers name and it coming up with no matches i presumed it was worth nothing. little did we know lol!

i started it at 4.99, within 18 minutes of it being on it went up to 25 quid! when i got up on wednesday morning it was already over 100 quid and i had a heap of e-mails. some offering to buy, some warning me i had an expensive item and advising me to remove it and sell at a specialist auction.

my head was in a spin... dave and i discussed it, so i thought i would research a bit more. to cut a very long story short, we contacted a dealer specialising in angling memorabilia and also i joined a forum to get their views (see the link below... its really great.. usa and ive made a few friends through it)

http://reeltalk.orcaonline.org/viewtopi ... sc&start=0

anyway, the auctioneer i spoke to came round yesterday and gave me a price, and it is going to auction on 19 November at Ludlow in Shropshire, and should sell for a fair bit. the auctioneers have at least two bidders from abroad (china and australia) who want it, so i just hope they are both in the money on the auction day.

to say this has been an exciting week is an understatement lol! i have had about 18 hours sleep in four days and im glad we now have a reserve figure.

i felt guilty taking it off ebay, but if you read the thread above (to at least save me repeating myself) you will im sure understand why i had too.

ive had loads of e-mails from the bidders thanking me for telling them what i am doing and i would just really like to emphasise that through dipping my toes in the water of the fishing community through ebay and the above forum has been great, and they are an honest and helpful group of people...

anyway, for those that are interested in watching the auction, i will post a link nearer the time so you can see it live on the net.

i hope ive not missed too much on here, but you will see from the above link i was a bit like a fish out of water (ha ha!) and i did refer to here more than once

ive made the odd post here and there, and i feel a bit guilty for not being around, but i thought it would be great to share what i had with a group of people as passionate about their hobby as we are ours, and i can say i have learnt a huge amount over the last 4 days! i can relax for a bit now, and for once look forward to winter... whatever we get for it will go on our bills and debts...

hope you will all have your fingers crossed for us, im sure you will!

John Stephenson, errrmmm a guy born in England with a Scottish accent. Remember to check your fingers after you have shook hands.

No seriously he’s a good friend and he will advertise the reel world wide.

Sharon you will have to read your history books and do some more research, why do the goners play in red? Answer because some of the original players borrowed some kit from their old club. Answer my team.

Whose unbeaten league record did you take, answer my team.

Who won TWO European cups back to back answer my team.

Ok we are suffering a temporary fall from grace but a small price to pay for winning the greatest club competition in the world TWICE.

Mullocks did not go down the link up with eBay but have joined up with Bid Live and people will be able to view the auction and bid on the reel.

You might be disappointed as it could all be over in seconds, they sell 100 to 150 lots an hour depending on the telephone bidders and other factors.

I hope the reel does well and you end up with a shed load of money.

As I have said I will keep a close watch on this story and do a report on the out come.

well stefan, i certainly enjoyed the footie at the weekend lol!

a wee update for you all:
I have an update for now. John Stephenson rang me this morning after seeing the reel, and even though it isnt the rarest of the rare, but on a scale of 1 to 10 its a definate 9.

He has dated it 1830 - 1835, and it will be the featured item in the catalogue with a reserve (not gonna put any values on here anymore for obvious reasons).

The catalogue should be out in four weeks and will have a large picture in so I will be sure to scan you a copy.

You were right Stefan, john confirmed today the interested bidders are South Carolina, Japan, and Sweden based (dont know where i got China from... probably all the talk of that fake auction!) Seems like a nice guy, very enthusiastic and helpful too.

More of my 2-cents ...

Don't make the fact that it has a reserve public knowledge. Reserves do not attract bidders, they limit them.

Ustonson Makers for the Queen Temple Bar London.

This would be Queen Victoria who ascended the throne in 1837 so it can not be 1830 - 1835.

No, of course you are right Steph.

It was a very rushed phonecall and I was scribbling down what he was telling me at my desk in work on my mobile (cell phone), so I may have written that down wrong. Im sure he must have said 1840 - 45, but wont be sure till its in the catalogue.

Whatever it was, he was right and I was wrong

Hello everybody,

Hope the waters are being kind to you all :D

The catalogue has finally been released, though I do not have a copy yet.

Below is a link to the online catalogue, it is entered at lot 200.

I think it is a great write up, and would love to hear your comments/observations

Shame we cant see the picture on there yet. As soon as I get my catalogue I will scan it and post a picture on here.

(edited by moderator: maybe this'll do for now? )

Well Ive decided I am cr*p at techy stuff! I got the catalogue through this morning and after trying to scan it for the last 3 hours this was the best I could do = sorry!

Apparantly my scanner had the hump with my computer and decided it did not "want to communicate" with it no longer... who the hell does it think it is!

So after a few re-starts and removing USB's and so on the pair finally sorted out their differences and started to talk again (to my relief!).

So all I've managed to do is a standard scan as I've no idea how to crop and edit etc, and to be honest Ive never used the scanner before! I only use the printer for printing so it's probably my fault that the disagreement happened in the first place!

Dave (hubby) is taking the catalogue to show a few friends at work tomorrow, now it all seems real. I watched an on-line auction today, was a bit boring, all about historical documents, pieces of paper selling for stupid amounts of money but by heck it really goes fast! 100 lots sell per hour, so if you blink you miss it!

There are 700 lots in this catalogue, the one in the picture next to mine on the right is the next highest valued in the book, so the auctioneers are in for a tidy sum on the 18th November I think!

Take care all, and if I can find a bit of patience over the next few days I promise a clearer picture, if possible!

Online auctions do happen extremely fast, unless the auctioneers believe there is a ton of interest in an item. Not to say this will happen with your reel but in my experience, if it's something not as rare, you can't type and hit submit fast enough to get bids in reliably. Even being on the phone is risky. If bidders really want it, they need to send in a proxy bid ahead of time.

Lot 203, must be the creation that you get when you ask a/an (plug in your favorite design professional here) to design a fishing reel!
